What is an easy saltwater fish to start with for beginners?

  1. Clownfish

Clownfish are from the same family as damselfish and are also small and hardy, not too expensive, and are not picky eaters. Though they are very territorial, they are generally not aggressive toward other fish. Some species can however show aggression towards other, in particular Tomato Clown fish.

They are typically seen with anemones in nature, but do not need an anemone in the aquarium. Keeping an anemone in the aquarium adds more complexity than a fish only tank, so anemones are not suggested for a beginner tank.

Should I put shrimp in my tank?

Shrimp be brightly coloured and beautiful to behold, but they serve a very important role in the tank as well, they are scavengers, helping to clean up after your fish and improving the water quality in your tank.

Keep in mind that, some freshwater shrimp are best kept in shrimp-only tanks – they may be preyed upon by larger fish species. If you want to keep fish with your shrimp, just be sure to choose fish species that are not carnivorous – even omnivorous fish have the potential to feed on shrimp as well.

How often should I feed my fish?

In most cases, feeding your fish once or twice a day is enough. Some pet owners even fast their fish one or two days a week to allow them to clear their digestive systems.
